Roosevelt ISD, artist rendering of bond projects
Most Lubbock County voters will not notice a difference in the May 3 election. But for those who do, it’s a big difference.
Up to 3,500 registered voters in the Roosevelt Independent School District (RISD) will vote for or against a $58.5 million bond – deciding the fate of a new elementary school and other projects. It’s the same bond package that failed in November by a vote of 195 to 133.
Roosevelt voters will have only two locations in early voting – April 22 through April 29 – and only one location on Election Day.
The two places for early voting are:
- Roosevelt ISD gymnasium at 1301 County Road 3300
- Lubbock County Elections Office at 1308 Crickets Avenue
The one location for Election Day is the gymnasium.
That’s different than for most of Lubbock County’s 190,000 registered voters who can choose 20 different locations for early voting – like it’s been the two decades. They can also choose 34 different locations on Election Day. Click here to see both lists.
The future of voting centers is being debated in Austin. Please see our other story we posted along with this one.
RISD and Ransom Canyon
A portion of local voters live in both the RISD and the town of Ransom Canyon. They can still show up at any vote center and cast a ballot in the Ransom Canyon election. But the school issue will not appear in the vote centers. On Election Day, but not early voting, Roosevelt voters who live in Ransom Canyon can vote both the school ballot and the town ballot.
To summarize for those who live in both RISD and Ransom Canyon:
- During early voting, you must show up twice – once at a vote center for the Ransom Canyon ballot and once at an RISD voting location – either the gymnasium or the elections office.
- On Election Day, you can show up at the gymnasium and cast both ballots.
- Take note, on April 26 and 27, the elections office and Roosevelt ISD gymnasium will be open for RISD voters only.
Why the difference for Roosevelt voters?
“They opted to have different [days and] hours for early voting than everybody else did,” said Roxzine Stinson, Lubbock County Elections Administrator.
Dallas Grimes, superintendent, said, “We wanted to make sure working families and staff that live in the district would have ample time outside of normal work hours, plus the weekend, to cast their votes.”
The vote centers will take a break on April 26 and 27. But the Roosevelt gymnasium will be available on those two days. Click here to see the official notice with dates and time.
“The County Election office made us aware that in order to have these expanded voting days and hours, we would need to host the election per state election law. By doing this, we can offer expanded hours and the weekend option to our District’s voters,” Grimes said.
