Tuesday morning LubbockLights.com launches a new website allowing us to do more.
We started working on this site with Newspack – a product of Word Press which has support from the Google News Initiative, the Knight Foundation and The Lenfest Institute.
It’s an example of how the world of nonprofit news websites work. There are a number of organizations helping sites like Lubbock Lights and hundreds more across the country.
We’re members of the Institute for Nonprofit News. They offer ongoing seminars on numerous topics of interest to us. That’s how I heard about Newspack.
Then I noticed my friend Susan Catron’s nonprofit news site in Georgia was on Newspack.
When I was editor of the Avalanche-Journal from 2006-15, Susan was editor of the paper in Savannah, Georgia. Both were then owned by Morris Communications. Susan’s a good friend.
She launched The Current, covering a few counties on the Georgia coast a few years before Lubbock Lights started in October of 2023.
Susan was a great resource when we started our site.
She strongly recommended Newspack and starting next week you’ll see why we started working with them.
The site will be more attractive and there will be more elements we can add to stories. That’s just for starters. More will follow.
Meanwhile, we appreciate the kind words we constantly hear about what Lubbock Lights is doing – filling a gap in local news coverage.
And it would not be possible without the generous support of our underwriters whose messages you see on our site and donors, who want to support our mission.
