In December, current Lubbock Mayor Trey Payne announced he would not seek re-election – sparking a six-man contest in the May 4 election.
Hot topics on their minds are crime and public safety, animal control, who pays for water and sewer repairs in public alleys, homelessness, budgeting priorities and the upcoming ballot initiative on enforcement of misdemeanor marijuana laws.
Politics aside, why are they running for a job paying $75 per month?
LubbockLights.com interviewed five of the candidates, asking why they wanted to run. We’ll publish their stories in alphabetical order by last name.

The local election will, for voters in the city, include municipal judge, City Council Districts 2, 4 and 6, a special election for District 3 and the marijuana proposition.

Early voting is April 22-30 and election day is a Saturday.
