Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick seeks a fourth term Tuesday against state Rep. Vikki Goodwin, who has trailed in name recognition

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick faces state Rep. Vikki Goodwin, D-Austin, in Tuesday's Nov. 3 election as he seeks a fourth term, The Texan reported Monday. Patrick has led in nine of a dozen nonpartisan polls, including the latest from the University of Houston, Texas Public Opinion Research and Texas Southern University, by 3 to 5 points.

Goodwin, a three-term House member, has worked to raise her name recognition; a late-October TSU poll found 47% of voters knew too little to rate her. Patrick has pushed "Operation Double Nickel," freezing homestead taxes at 55 and raising exemptions. Goodwin wants to end data center subsidies and raise teacher pay.

Trump gives his closing midterm pitch Monday at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool after final rallies in Iowa and Kansas

President Donald Trump will make his closing argument of the midterm elections Monday afternoon, Nov. 2, at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, the White House announced, putting his troubled renovation of the site back in the spotlight on the eve of Tuesday's vote, the Associated Press reported.

Trump wrapped up his rally schedule Sunday in Dubuque, Iowa, and Salina, Kansas, where Republicans face strong Democratic challenges, telling supporters the GOP was headed for sweeping wins. A judge dismissed the Justice Department's bid to block certification of Alaska's Senate race, and the department says it will appeal

U.S. District Judge Sharon Gleason on Sunday, Nov. 1, dismissed the Justice Department's lawsuit seeking to block certification of Alaska's U.S. Senate race if Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan loses, calling the relief sought "infeasible" because many ballots are already cast. The department quickly filed notice it would appeal, Fox News and the Associated Press reported.

The suit sought an investigation into whether votes for a little-known candidate, retired teacher Dan J. Sullivan, were meant for the senator. Gleason said the government offered no workable plan to do that while preserving ballot secrecy. Sullivan faces Democrat Mary Peltola in Tuesday's ranked-choice election, one of the races expected to decide Senate control.

The Justice Department asks a judge to weigh contempt against researchers who found 40% of its California 'noncitizen voter' list isn't on the rolls

The Justice Department on Sunday, Nov. 1, defended its list of more than 20,000 alleged noncitizens registered to vote in California and asked Chief U.S. District Judge James Boasberg to consider referring an immigrant rights group and its lawyers for possible criminal contempt, the Associated Press reported.

The group's analysis, filed Saturday, found more than 40% of the names were not in the state's voter file and that 22 were likely naturalized citizens. The department said publishing it violated Boasberg's order limiting the data to arguments about legal standing. UCLA's Voting Rights Project, which did the analysis, said counsel fully complied. The department also appealed a separate ruling protecting election workers.

Open enrollment for Affordable Care Act marketplace plans began Sunday, Nov. 1, in most states and runs through Jan. 15, with shoppers facing higher premiums, fewer coverage options and narrower eligibility for financial help in 2027, the Associated Press reported.

KFF's Cynthia Cox said those without subsidies may struggle to keep coverage, and many have already moved to cheaper bronze plans. About 19.2 million people were enrolled as of February.

Canada's Mark Carney reports progress toward a U.S. trade deal, and Trump says the sides have 'the concept' of one

Flash flooding forced evacuations across Arizona, New Mexico and a Colorado resort town bracing for a record river crest

Heavy rain produced flash flooding and mandatory evacuations across the Southwest on Sunday, Nov. 1, the Associated Press reported. Officials in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, warned of potentially catastrophic flooding as the San Juan River was forecast to crest above 20 feet, higher than the 1911 flood that wiped out most of the town.

Sedona, Camp Verde and Gisela in Arizona ordered evacuations near swollen creeks, with swift-water rescues as far south as Tucson, and northern New Mexico communities did the same. A National Weather Service meteorologist in Tucson said the region was getting two or three months of rain in a couple of days. Rain was expected to continue through Monday.

Israeli officials say last week's election will stand after Netanyahu's party claimed Arab parties 'stole' it

Israel's elections committee chief, attorney general and Shin Bet director said Sunday, Nov. 1, that last week's election would stand even if claims of foreign interference are substantiated, undercutting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's effort to question the result, the Associated Press reported. A court also ordered suspects in an alleged vote-buying case freed or eased their restrictions.

Netanyahu's Likud has claimed without evidence that Arab-led parties stole the Oct. 27 vote, in which his bloc fell to 53 of 120 seats. Gadi Eisenkot's bloc won 48 and Arab-led parties 19, together enough to govern. Ra'am leader Mansour Abbas called the arrests undemocratic. Results are due to be certified this week.

The war's most significant truce, around Ukraine's Oleshky and the Kherson region, was set to end Sunday evening

A localized ceasefire across occupied Oleshky and the surrounding Kherson region, the most significant truce since Russia's full-scale invasion, was set to end Sunday evening, Nov. 1, as civilians prepared for fighting to resume, the Associated Press reported. The White House credited first lady Melania Trump with helping broker the pause, which began Tuesday.

The truce allowed a rare joint evacuation of an estimated 2,000 civilians, who could leave for Ukrainian- or Russian-held territory or stay with new supplies. Elsewhere, strikes continued: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian attacks on energy systems left hundreds of thousands of families without power overnight.

The U.N. peacekeeping mission in Western Sahara shut down Sunday after 35 years amid a U.S.-Russia standoff

The United Nations' peacekeeping mission for the disputed Western Sahara ceased operations Sunday, Nov. 1, after 35 years, the Associated Press reported, after Russia vetoed a U.S. draft resolution Friday backing Morocco's sovereignty claim and a rival Russian extension was voted down.

U.N. spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said a smaller team will oversee the return of troop-contributing countries' equipment. Morocco's royal palace welcomed the end of the mission, while the Algeria-backed Polisario Front called it unacceptable. The mineral-rich territory, roughly the size of Colorado, is Africa's longest territorial dispute, and the mission's end raises concerns about regional stability.
