Name: John Murray
Rank: Corporal
How many years with the department: Six
Role/certifications/current assignment: Patrol Corporal/Field Training Officer, TCOLE instructor, Crime Scene Officer, Special Reaction Group/East Division Midnights Patrol
Hometown: Calumet, Oklahoma
Education: High school diploma from Calumet High School, some college completed at Redlands Community College prior to enlisting in the United States Marine Corps
Spouse/children: Married with two kids
Why did you choose this profession: I didn’t feel like my time serving others was completed after departing the Marine Corps. I chose this profession to continue giving back to everyday Americans.
How do you deal with stressful situations: I try to remember we can only control what we can control. I frequently mentally rehearse calls for service and worst case scenarios. Mix that with spending a lot of my personal time training (whether that’s at the range or at the BJJ gym). Putting that all together allows for a calm and clear head in the middle of adversity.
Honors/highlights: This is not necessarily some award or recognition that I’ve received, but more of a proud moment for me. I’ve felt most honored to be apart of the Lubbock Police Department and the greater Lubbock Community. In May of 2022, Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas was targeted by a lone gunman. Myself and three other officers volunteered to go to Uvalde and assist the community through the most evil act that happens in the modern day. The Lubbock Police Department quickly organized the group and sent us to spend about a week in the region. I learned more about myself in that sole week than I did the entire five years I spent in the Marine Corps. I’m proud of our city and our police department knowing that when Texans need help, they will be provided the help without a second thought.
Hobbies/interests: Being the best father and role model I can to two little kids. Who knew I’d have to learn so much about dinosaurs?
Quote: “Be curious, not judgmental.”
