Democrats won control of the U.S. Senate Tuesday night, according to Associated Press race calls reported by NPR.

The Democratic caucus held 51 seats in AP results displayed by NPR at 10:54 p.m. CST, including 49 Democrats and two independents. Republicans held 39 seats, with 10 races still uncalled. Those totals include senators whose seats were not up for election.

Democrats secured the majority after Josh Turek defeated Republican Ashley Hinson in Iowa, NPR reported, citing AP.

Republicans entered the election with a 53–47 majority. The result gives Democrats control of Senate committees and a majority vote on legislation and presidential nominations beginning in January.

Control of the U.S. House remained uncalled at the time of this update.
