Hermleigh ISD tightens security after phoned threat to Scurry County schools

Hermleigh ISD held classes Thursday under hold-and-secure rules — exterior doors locked, activities moved indoors, visitors restricted — after the Scurry County Sheriff's Department received a voicemail threat from the Metroplex late Wednesday. Superintendent Jessie Ellerbe told parents the threat is not deemed credible; its origin is under investigation.

Former Muleshoe teacher indicted on federal child-enticement charge

A federal grand jury indicted a 28-year-old former Muleshoe High School teacher — name withheld — for enticement of a minor, prosecutors said Wednesday, alleging explicit phone contact with a 17-year-old student from October 2025 through May 2026. Texas Rangers began investigating in June; conviction carries a 10-year minimum.

Hurricane Lowell's pass leaves Hawaii one dead and Kauai in the dark

Honolulu police say a man living in a tent at Waimanalo's Sherwood Beach died when a tree trunk fell on him as Hurricane Lowell passed Hawaii Tuesday night — the storm's first reported death. Nearly all 35,000 Kauai utility customers lost power; about 300 people remained in shelters.
