Why did you choose this profession? I’ve always been someone who likes doing things for people. I did electronics construction for residential and commercial jobs – electronics, wiring and stuff. But I got tired of it. I went into Station 14 and asked the guys if they like their jobs and they said they love their job. Everyone said it at same time. I had no fire background – I grew up on a farm – but I started pursuing it because it would give me a reason to go to work.
How do you deal with stressful situations? It’s different now than when I was younger. I learn how to take a stressful situation/problem and figure out how to break it down, how to fix and solve. One step at a time to make the situation better. Learned a lot from my peers and veterans on how to compartmentalize and get through it. I also work with a counselor to have a baseline and not take it home. And being home with my family also helps.
Honors/highlights: Honor Guard is a big thing for firefighters who’ve died. Public education with kids. And last August I also became fire chief for Ropesville after it was shut down in 2011.
Hobbies & interests: Jujitsu. Traveling and seeing different parts of the country as a family. Building things at home – I’m a handyman. Fishing and hiking.
Community involvement beyond work: Substitute at school to give back and do CPR training classes.
